The story of “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken” has a Filipino traditional sport called “sabong/cockfighting”. Watching the video regards to it, triggered my curiosity whether or not they found the answer they were looking for. The story displayed the action of a chicken and another chicken fighting, wherein the chicken is playing a traditional Filipino sport. This essay will be talking about the story, “My Brother’s Peculiar Chicken”, the filipino traditional sport called “sabong/cockfighting” and will include some of my opinions.
A scene from the story talked about how they saw 2 chickens fighting in the fields and ended up catching the other chicken they wanted. The main character and the brother saw 2 chickens in the field fighting and thought that the other chicken was good at it, so the brother ended up catching it. This displays the chickens playing a traditional Filipino sport, “Sabong/Cockfighting”. Although I think that we should increase the number of chickens instead of only 2 chickens playing the sport, it will make it more interesting to watch.
Another scene that I found that was interesting was when the brother said “the teniente del barrio, chief of the village”. A chief is like a president or is incharge of a specific place. I find it weird since it's only 1 person that’s managing the village, I think that there should be more than 1 person. It will help lower the things needed to do, it will make it more efficient and will also make it easier to manage the people and the environment.
A scene that caught my attention was when the main character and the brother were arguing whether or not the chicken was a hen or a rooster. They continued arguing till it was noon, when they got back to the house for lunch they kept arguing. The mother eventually stopped them by reminding them not to argue while food is on the table. In my opinion, it should be ok to discuss something like that. It will help with lesser things to worry about but as what they were doing is not discussing, they were arguing and it is not a must while there is food on the table.
Therefore, this story is not only talking about the sport called “Sabong/Cockfighting” but it is also talking about the status of the chief in the village and table etiquette of the main character and his brother. The sport can be a legend, a myth but how we still play the sport is proof that it exists. Though we have different traditions, culture and beliefs, we all have one thing in common. Which is our ability to respect and love one another whether what race, color, culture, etc. we all still respect and love each other.
